Position Summary
Based out of Avalon Mall, the Team Lead, Backshift Cleaning is responsible for overseeing the backshift cleaning team, ensuring mall common areas are cleaned to high standards while providing leadership, coaching, and support to staff and collaborating with the Operations Manager to maintain a safe and efficient work environment. Additional duties of the Team Lead, Backshift Cleaning include but are not limited to:
- Supervise and lead internal and contract backshift cleaning staff by allocating duties and equipment, ensuring all work is completed to required standards, and acting as a liaison with the Operations Manager.
- Train all team members on the safe, proper operation and routine maintenance of cleaning equipment (e.g., Tennant floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, commercial vacuums), ensuring equipment is used correctly and consistently on each shift as required.
- Complete staff schedules, collect and submit timesheets and vacation requests to Operation Manager.
- Foster a supportive, inclusive, and accountable team environment by coaching, motivating, and empowering staff to take ownership of their work and professional growth.
- Support team engagement initiatives and contribute to a positive team culture that aligns with organizational values.
- Demonstrate understanding of the importance of safety in the workplace and follow all health and safety procedures while identifying OH&S concerns or improvements.
- Partner with the Operations Manager to support the resolution of tenant, employee, and building concerns.
- Conduct routine inspections of mall common areas including corridors, entrances, washrooms, and service areas to ensure cleaning standards are met before opening.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members and oversee training of all new contract cleaning staff.
- Manage the care, storage, and maintenance of all cleaning equipment and coordinate supplies and maintenance needs with the Operations Manager
- Responsible for general mall common area cleaning, including but not limited to:
- Removing garbage and waste from all common areas, corridors, and service spaces.
- Cleaning and disinfecting washrooms, touchpoints, fixtures, and high-contact surfaces.
- Sweeping, vacuuming, dry and wet mopping, scrubbing, and waxing floors, hallways, and stairwells.
- Cleaning windows, interior walls, ceilings, and architectural features.
- Dusting, wiping, and maintaining mall fixtures and seasonal décor.
- Managing recycling and waste streams in line with mall policies.
- Supporting seasonal and deep cleaning projects such as winter salt removal and large-scale floor care.
- Maintaining plants and interior greenery as required within common areas.
- Engages across all levels of the organization to create and promote a safe and respectful work environment.
- Other special projects and tasks as assigned.
The profile we are looking for
- Minimum 5 years of janitorial or custodial experience in a commercial environment considered an asset.
- Demonstrated people leadership skills considered a strong asset.
- Strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
- Proven time management and organizational abilities.
- Basic computer proficiency (timekeeping systems, email, etc.).
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety and security of customers, tenants, and team members.
- Clear criminal record check.
Physical demands may include:
- Capability to meet the role’s medium physical demand level – lifting and/or carrying: seldom 26 – 50 pounds; occasional 26 – 50 pounds.
