March 8 is International Women’s Day – a day that globally celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. This year’s theme of International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity.
The terms equity and equality are often used interchangeably, when in actuality, these concepts are fundamentally different. So, what is, and why is it important to understand, the difference between the two?
Equality means everyone is treated the same exact way, regardless of individual differences. Equality assumes that we all have the same needs, and therefore the same solution will work for everyone.
Equity, on the other hand, recognizes that each person has different circumstances, and ensures that everyone has access to the same treatment, opportunities, and advancements, while aiming to identify and eliminate barriers. An equity mindset treats everyone based on their individual needs, with a view to creating equal outcomes.
