Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, Construction, Western Canada, the Manager, Estimation contributes to Crombie success by providing support to the National Construction team to ensure the successful delivery of retail and residential construction projects in Central Canada. This role prepares cost and budget estimates, progress reports, and cost tracking reports for construction projects to aid management in determining project costs. Additional duties of the Manager, Estimation include but are not limited to;

  • Supporting the National Design and Construction teams in the implementation of the construction and development strategy as it relates to construction planning, budgeting, value-added costing, material sourcing, and estimating.
  • Consulting with key stakeholders to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Providing oversight and leadership to the Senior Estimator and Design & Construction Coordinator
  • Ensures that all budgets and estimates are accurate and well researched based on current and historical information, reflect current trends in the market, and draws from a variety of sources.
  • Keeping abreast of trends within the market relative to construction materials and construction processes.
  • Analyzing blueprints, specifications, bids, quotations, and other documentation to prepare probable time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.
  • Preparing estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors, collecting and analyzing quotes from sub-contractors and suppliers to ensure the best deal for Crombie.
  • Liaising and openly communicating with engineers, contractors, consultants, and other relevant parties on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
  • Preparing estimates used by management for purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work.
  • Preparing cost and expenditure statements and forecasts at regular intervals for the duration of the project.
  • Assessing cost effectiveness of products, projects or services, tracking actual costs relative to forecasted costs as project develops.
  • Setting up cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures.
  • Establishing effective working relations with all internal departments, consultants, contractors, and suppliers, on which we depend for the successful execution of construction projects.
  • Advising tendering procedures, examining and analyzing tenders, recommending tender awards, and conducting negotiations.
  • Preparing and maintaining a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Cultivating strong working relationships internally across all departments by building relationships with external partners and stakeholders.
  • Engaging across all levels of the organization to create and promote a safe and respectful work environment.
  • Other tasks and special projects as assigned.

The Profile We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate is a strategic and analytical thinker who can develop and collaborate to drive Crombie’s success with a minimum of five to seven years of related experience in commercial and residential real estate which includes construction planning, budgeting, value-added costing, material sourcing and detailed estimating for major development projects. A post-secondary degree or diploma in Architectural Engineering is preferred, with preference being given to candidates who hold (or are in progress of obtaining) designations including but not limited to PQS & GSC. Exceptional analytical, and problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage a complex workload and prioritize appropriately while leading a team of driven individuals is mandatory. Professionalism and superior communication skills both verbally and written are essential. The successful candidate must be a self-starter who is able to develop and build relationships internally and externally, as well as the ability to maintain confidential information.
